Each day we are bombarding by advertising. We see or hear many different images and messages that try to get us to do something, buy something, or even think something.

Recently the students in Grade 5-7 thought about the power of advertising and wondered if it could be used in a positive way.

They spent time reading through the promises that God makes to us in the Bible. There are many!

And then they took what they learned about advertising and used it to create an advertisement for one of God’s promises.

They planned their advertisement, taking into consideration colours and images that would help their message be seen and heard.

Each student has a sketch book where they work on drafts of their ideas.

Taking time to draw out their plan helps the students to visualize and rework their ideas. It allows them to use feedback to improve upon their final product.

In the end they create beautiful work that is well thought out.

In Kindergarten we have had the opportunity to experience first hand how wonderful and powerful God is, as we have watched monarch caterpillars turn into chrysalis and emerge into beautiful butterflies! Wow!

During the second week of class I brought three white, green and black monarch caterpillars into our classroom. They ate a steady diet of milk weed and their first few days in class were spent eating and eating. They students would gather around the butterfly net and watched them move around the leaves and the butterfly net as they slowly got bigger. The students often stated, “I wonder when they will change?”

Within the first few days, one of the caterpillars crawled up to the top of the net and suddenly we had our first chrysalis! Over the next four days all three butterflies had made a chrysalis. We found it funny that they always changed when we were out at recess. We spent some time learning about natural predators and how caterpillars survive in the wild.

After the chrysalis formed the students would arrive at school and wonder if this was the day that a butterfly would emerge and one day it did! We had studied and knew that as the transformation occurred inside the chrysalis it would change in colour, moving from light green to dark green to black to clear. The students would rush over to look inside the butterfly net each morning and wonder if this was the day that we would see a change until finally we had three beautiful butterflies. Two girls and one boy.

I enjoy teaching sports to our students. It is an opportunity to praise God with our bodies, as well as learn important life skills such as teamwork, encouragement and leadership. It also gives students an opportunity to step outside of their immediate community and build connections through sport.

This past week we were able to participate in the annual Christian Schools Soccer Tournament, annually hosted by CCS in Metcalfe. Students have been preparing for this tournament since the start of school and it has been great to see their skills develop and improve over the past month. We even had the opportunity to host an exhibition game against St. Lawrence Academy, a smaller Christian school in Prescott.![](20190925_1402510_liylkp)

Our students performed well at the soccer tournament. We won our first two games before bowing out in the semi-finals. Our students worked really hard and showed how their skills progressed. This was an especially impressive tournament, considering that we were a young team competing against other schools’ Grade 8s. I am really looking forward to what we can learn and accomplish for the rest of the year, and even into next year.![](20190927_133757_efaeil)

There are a lot of things to work on when teaching students to write …

- sentence structure
- proper punctuation
- organization
- word choice
- adding juicy details

Is there a way to work on all that and build community?

Well, the students in Grade 1-2 recently met with their buddies in Grade 3-4 to do a collaborative writing assignment. It was a chance for everyone to work on building their writing skills and build community.

The students were given a story starter and asked to use their imagination to finish the story.

There was a creative buzz in the room as the students excited shared their ideas and started writing.

Take a moment to read some of their amazing stories:

- **\*Every time the dog, barked something unusual happened.** First when the dog barked a horse popped out in the middle of nowhere and flew away. Second, when the dog barked there was a pig that grew and grew and grew until it was 100 times bigger. Third, when the dog barked it disappeared and everything went normal again. The end.\*

- **\*One day I woke up and looked out the window. To my surprise I saw that the house was floating high up in the clouds! I quickly ran to the door and ….** looked out. The houses looked so small. The people looked like dolls. I ran up the stairs to the attic to find my sky diving gear. I LOOKED everywhere but I could not find it. I opened a box labeled stinky socks and found it. I made sure that it was all there. I put it on and ran down the stairs. I opened the door and jumped out – cowabunga!!!!! I landed on the comfiest bed ever and fell asleep. The end.\*

The students loved having a chance to read their amazing stories to the class and the rest of the students enjoyed hearing the creative ideas of others.

Many skills were built during this activity

- story organization – they wrote a story with a beginning, middle and an end.
- creativity – they used their imaginations to come up with original ideas
- collaboration – they worked together and come up with an idea they both liked
- word choice – they come up with unique and interesting words
- spelling – they sounded out new words, helping each other to spell accurately
- focus – they worked diligently until their story was finished

Together they were building knowledge and community!

As Helen Keller once said: “Alone, we can do so little. Together, we can do so much.”

Today was our first Fab Friday of the year.

On Fab Fridays we dress up according to a theme and this theme was Royalty Day.

Our day started as we joined together for a singing chapel.

It was fun to see everyone dressed up to sing some songs together.

One song was **King of my Heart**, where we sang the words:

_Let the King of my heart_  
_Be the mountain where I run_  
_The fountain I drink from_  
_Oh, He is my song_

We also sang **No Longer Slaves** joining together to sing:

_I’m no longer a slave to fear_  
_I am a child of God_  
_I’m no longer a slave to fear_  
_I am a child of God_

Singing together reminded us who we are and whose we are … we are children of God, we are children of the King of kings!

How wonderful to think that no matter who we are, whether we’re the real Queen of England, or we’re just dressing up as the Queen of England for the day, we **are** royalty, sons and daughter of the King!

Royalty Day!


For many years at TCS the Kindergarten students have had a big buddy. They are paired with an older student and throughout the year they form a strong relationship.

Today the students in Kindergarten were paired with someone in Grade 5-7. It was an exciting day as they found out who their buddy was going to be and were able to do an activity together.

Buddies for everyone!

We know that we all need someone to be looking out for us and by giving every student in the school a buddy we hope that we can help our students learn to care for and support each other.

We want our students to be seen and know – by their teachers and also by each other. Giving everyone a buddy will help them to know others who are not in their classroom. It gives our students a chance to build community.

**Q. What is the mission of the school?**

A. Timothy Christian School is an independent elementary school that educates children through Christ-centred quality programs that combine faith and learning. Our mission is lived out each day as we work with students to help them build knowledge, build faith and build community.

**Q: How does the Bible fit into your programs?**

A: We believe that God is the creator of all and that all things hold together through Jesus Christ. Knowing that, we seek to teach all of our subjects from a Biblical perspective. Some subjects allow for more of that than others, but teachers make a continuous effort to make connections between concepts and Biblical applications in all subjects.

**Q: Do you have French immersion?**

A: No, but we have a solid French program at every grade level. Students in Grade 5-6 are in the [Extended French](https://tcswilliamsburg.ca/french/) program, where they spend the first 100 minutes of every day learning in French. Extended French uses a theme based program that is designed to help students speak and use French in authentic situations.

**Q: Is the school involved in any kind of skills testing?**

A: Yes. Three times a year the students in Grade 3-8 complete an [online testing](https://www.nwea.org/) that assesses their skills in Language and Math. The assessment adapts individually to each student and gives a picture of what the student is able to do and what they are ready to learn.

**Q. Do you offer full time Kindergarten?**

A. Yes, we offer optional full time [Kindergarten](https://tcswilliamsburg.ca/kindergarten/) for parents who would like it. The regular Kindergarten program runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday and is taught by a certified teacher. The Extended Kindergarten program runs Tuesday and Thursday and is taught by a certified Early Childhood Educator.

**Q. Are your teachers certified?**

A. Yes. All teachers have been certified by the Ontario College of Teachers and many of them have been certified through the Christian School Association as well. In addition, teachers regularly participate in Profession Development opportunities.

**Q: Is the tuition fee set on a per child basis?**

A: No, there is one family rate. The tuition fee covers all of the school-age children in the family. However, you don’t pay full tuition until your oldest child is in Grade 1. For a child to attend Junior or Senior Kindergarten the fee is less than standard tuition.

**Q: How is the financial investment to send our children to your school determined?**

A: Our school is financed by tuition fees and donations. We are an independent school, outside of the two public systems, so we receive no direct government funding. Tuition fees are determined at the spring membership meeting of the Timothy Christian School Society.

**Q: Is there financial support available?**

A: There is a bursary committee with limited funds in place to help families who truly desire a Christian education for their children but whose income doesn’t allow for the complete payment of these tuition amounts.

**Q: Are there any financial incentives available to parents?**

A: Yes. Because Timothy Christian School is a registered charity, a portion of what parents pay for tuition is treated as a charitable donation. The other portion, known as the Cost per Student, is not eligible for a tax receipt. The difference between the amount paid and the Cost per Student portion is the amount that can be claimed on your tax return as a charitable donation.

**Q: Where do all your school families live?**

A: We have a large geographical base. We have families from Kemptville to Cornwall, Iroquois to Chesterville sending their children.

**Q: Is transportation included in the tuition?**

A: No. There are no school buses. All of our parents drive their children to school, mainly through car pools.

**Q: Is your school controlled by the Christian Reformed Church?**

A: No, it isn’t. A number of families attend Christian Reformed Churches and this denomination has been in the forefront of Christian day schooling in Canada for more than 50 years. However, Timothy Christian School has many different denominations represented in our student body.

**Q: Who actually controls this school?**

A: We are a society-controlled school. Parents are elected by the society membership to serve terms on the Board of Directors. In addition, a number of committees provide valuable information to the Board on a regular basis.

**Q: How long has this school been in existence?**

A: Since 1963.

**Q: How many other Christian schools are in Ontario?**

A: About 75 schools, including ours, make up Edvance, the Christian School Association of Ontario, educating almost 13,000 students.

At the beginning of May we had our Psalm 8 Celebration of Learning and you may have thought that work on the projects stopped then.

However ….

Recently, a couple of classes extended their projects, doing real work that met the needs of real people in the community.

During our Psalm 8 project, the students in Grade 8 saw themselves as givers. They realized that God has gifted each of them uniquely and he wants to use them in a special way. If you came to the Celebration of Learning you saw the individual service projects that each student did.

Last week the students joined forces for one last opportunity to give together before the school year ends. They cooked a delicious taco supper which they served at the House of Lazarus’ monthly community supper.

The Grade 5-6 class looked at garbage and wondered how we can throw out less garbage. They did a lot of things at school to reduce garbage like building a compost bin, encouraging recycling and making signs to help people know what to do.

A week ago they spent a couple of days working together to sew reusable snack bags and make beeswax food wraps.

They took everything they made to Art on the Waterfront in Chesterville where they shared with people about the garbage project and sold their product. All the money they raised goes into the recycling program at school.

Maybe you remember all the amazing plants that the Grade 1-2 class grew as they learned to be caretakers of creation. On the first sunny and warm day last week they took everything and planted it in the community garden at the House of Lazarus.
