Kingdom Building at the Bazaar


The Grade 1&2s recently completed projects on the provinces and territories of Canada. Done independently during class time, students were first taught how to locate information on the provincial bird and flower for their chosen province/territory. They were all given information cards on the bird or flower for their province, and from those cards they located the information needed for their poster.

Next students were taught how to create a bold and eye-catching title. They traced letters from stencils, and coloured and outlined them brightly on their posters.

Finally, students coloured their province on a blank map, and glued all of their information on their poster. They then looked through “Our Canada” magazines and located pictures of their province to glue on.

The final products looked amazing! Students did a great job learning how to research, and how to glue information attractively on a poster. They not only enjoyed learning fun facts and information about their chosen province/territory, but they also learned the beginning skills needed to research and create information posters.

Canada Projects


3.1415926….

While I can only recite the first few digits of pi, there are people in the world who can recite hundreds or thousands of the random digits of pi. Why is there such a fascination with the number pi? While some people don’t think much about it after completing their last high school math class, others use formulas containing pi in their everyday work as engineers or astronomers. Others only think about pi once a year, on March 14th (3/14), a day dedicated to commemorating this irrational number.

Although Pi Day fell in the middle of March Break, we didn’t want to miss this opportunity to have fun learning with math (and food!), so we celebrated a week later.

We started the morning learning a little bit about this number, and how people used to calculate it before calculators and computers. References to circumference being three times the diameter of a circle go back as far as Bible times, with a mention in 1 Kings 7. Around the time of Christ, Pi was calculated to 4 decimal places. Once calculators and computers entered the pictures, people began calculating more and more digits, and now there are trillions of known digits.

The number pi shows up in so many different formulas having to do with circles – circumference, area, volume of a cylinder, cone and sphere. After we talked about pi, we learned these formulas and practiced using them. We checked out three different snacks: A spherical Timbit, a cylindrical cookie, and a piece of cake (1/16 of a cylinder). We measured each of these snacks and calculated their volume.

Using our 3-D fillable shapes, we calculated volume in two different ways: First, filling the shapes with water and measuring the volume, and second, measuring the radius and height, and calculating the volume. When our volumes didn’t match up too well, we discussed the possible errors in our experiment.

We also measured some mystery cans, trying to get as close as possible to the volume printed on the label (that had been removed). We guess what the contents of the cans could be… A hint: We will be using it next week to make pies.

Other activities included a pi-shaped puzzle, and writing Pi-kus (A three lined poem, where the first line has three syllables, the second line has one syllable, and the third line has four syllables.)

And for a special pi day treat, students brought in treats to share. The only stipulation: They had to be round. Timbits, peppermints, round chips, cookie dough balls, doughnuts. We enjoyed our Pi day feast!

Happy belated Pi Day to you!


Pi Day


For the past few weeks, our Grade 3/4 class has been learning about Italy. We started off learning about the Ancient Romans (the first Italians), and then progressed to learning about modern-day Italy through its economy, geography, and major cities. But I’d have to say that the lesson the students were most excited to learn about was about Italian food (and who can blame them right?).

Students were challenged to try Italian foods: sun-dried tomatoes, olives and pizelles (thin cookies baked in a cookie press). Then came a new challenge: to make fresh, homemade, Italian pasta with their bare hands! It was amazing to see was the excitement from the students throughout the process, leading to the obvious culmination of the process – getting to taste the food!

Students first learned how to make traditional Italian dough, from Northern Italy. They had to mix dry ingredients together, make a circular trench in the middle, add eggs and olive oil, and mix everything together by hand. Then students spent time kneading the dough until it was the right consistency, rolled their dough into a ball, and finally set it aside in a baggie to rest until we would resume our activity the next day.

The next step in the process involved flattening the dough with a machine (multiple times until it was almost paper thin) and then feeding the thin dough through a separate apparatus which cut the dough into noodles (either linguine or spaghetti). Students would then either separate the noodles from each other or use extra dough to hand-cut little bowtie pieces of pasta (called farfalle).

This activity was an amazing learning experience for our class. They learned how to make something with their own hands, follow processes, new language (such as linguine, spaghetti or farfalle), and gained an appreciation for the work involved to make something for yourself. A big thank you to Mrs. Geertsema for ALL of her help, patience, and willingness to come to our class and help us learn new things! Grazie!

Italy: Il Bel Paese (The Beautiful Country)


Have you even wondered what goes on in a school on the day before March Break? Report cards for Term 2 are finished and everyone is thinking about the week ahead. So what do the teachers an students do all day?

Well……

The Kindergarten students were busy working at alphabet centers. Some were learning to read three letter words, some were practicing printing the alphabet and some were figuring out the beginning sounds of words. Everyone was hard at work, learning at their own level.

And then Mrs. Johnson told us the most amazing thing …. you don’t have patellas when you are born. Your patellas are your kneecaps and you don’t grow them until you are 2 years old!!

We love learning about our skeleton. Thank you, Mrs Johnson, for answering our questions and teaching us more about the amazing way God has put together our bones.

Bones!


One of our choices for Winter Electives this year was woodworking. Students went off-site to the home of one of their leaders, so that they were able to work in his workshop. With their leaders, Steve Geertsema and Jack VanGilst, they were shown the workshop and tools, and given some safety guidelines. “I learned about safety,” Ben told me, “and about which tools I should never use without an adult.”

Over the five week session, students built a traditional French shuffle-board game called Passe-Trappe. They looked at the example and drew out a plan, then cut, sanded, drilled, glued and sprayed to complete their own game.

“I learned about measuring and safety,” Cian told me, when I asked about his experiences. Braydon told me excitedly, “I’m one of the only people in my family who knows how to woodwork. I enjoyed sanding and drilling.”

The students were excited to talk about their finished game. Cian told me how he had taught his family to play the game that they had enjoyed playing together. Ben said, “I brought it to my Pake and Beppe’s (his grandparents) this weekend for my cousins’ birthday party. We played lots and lots of games of it.” The pride was evident on his face and he talked about his game.![](IMG_0498-e1488570285150_no9ose)

During their last session, the group an elastic powered car. The boys enjoyed building and racing their cars, and they were proud to show them to their peers at school.

Woodworking Winter Elective


**Hip Hip Hooray, It’s the 100th Day!**

On Wednesday, Feb 22nd, the Gr. 1/2 class celebrated one of their favourite days. 100 Day! They had been patiently counting down the days of school to reach the 100th day of school, and could not wait to celebrate the day by participating in a wide variety of activities all planned around the number 100!

After creating their 100 day crowns, students began to work in their 100 day activity book. They completed dot to dot pages to 100, found 100 rhyming words, solved a word puzzle to find the secret 100 day message, and completed other fun literacy based activities.

For Math, students separated into groups and completed different Math centres. Some of the centres included: building a 100 cup tower, estimating and measuring how much 100 drops of water is, seeing how many times it took to roll a dice to make 100, and finally measuring and weighing their bag of 100 items they had been asked to bring in. It was fun to see how long some of the lines of 100 things went down the school hallway!

Students also counted and created patterns using 100 fruit loops. A favourite 100 day activity because when they are done, they get to eat their tasty creation!

For Creative Writing, students created a class book entitled “Things We’ve Been Told 100 Times.” It was hilarious to read some of the things they know their parents or teacher have told them 100 times to do!

Students also completed a page on “Before I Turn 100 I Want To…” Some of their bucket list items were very interesting to read. This kids have big dreams for their futures! Check out their writing in the hallway by the Gr. 1/2 room if you would like to read more of them!

Finally we completed a 100 day themed art. Students cut out the number 100, and then had to somehow incorporate it into their drawing. They showed excellent creativity, and it was interesting to see all of the ways that 100 could be made into a picture!

Hip Hip Hooray, It's the 100th Day!

We are very excited to introduce a NEW program at Timothy Christian School — **Before and After School Program**, provided by Happy Face Nursery School (Williamsburg Location).

After months of work and planning, the NEW program is set to take off on Monday February 27, 2017.

Last year, we surveyed our TCS families and learned that there was a definite need for a before and after school program at our school. Partnering with a community respected, non-for-profit organization such as [Happy Face Nursery School](http://happyfacechildcare.ca), we are excited to offer up this option as a way to bridge the needs for our part-time, full-time, or seasonal working parents in a safe and affordable program.

The before and after school program is available for all families – not exclusively TCS families. We are excited to open the facility of our school to serve the school community, and broader community of Dundas County and beyond. While TCS is opening the door of our facility for Happy Face Nursery School, it is very important to note that this is a separate option for any parent and is not connected to the school except for location.

The Before and After School Program is for any child that is 3.8 – 12 years old. Starting times can be anywhere from 6am to school starting time, and from school ending time to 6pm. Rates are $5.00 per hour per child. Children from other schools could have the busing option of being dropped off or picked up from the Before and After School Program at TCS. Happy Face Nursery School can also offer care to children on PD days (though not on stat holidays), March Break days, Christmas Break and possibly during the summer as well!
