Learning from Experts

By Heidi Blokland

The school is a buzz with learning these days. And in some classroom that is more literal than others 🙂

Each class is learning about something in preparation for our Spring Celebration of Learning. Sometimes we learn from books or different texts. Sometimes we learn from videos or movies. But recently students have had a chance to learn from local experts.

The students in Kindergarten had a visit from Mr. Vuyk, who is a local beekeeper. He came dressed in his bee keeping gear and brought in a hive for the students to touch and explore. Students learned a lot and were able to ask all sorts of questions. They got to see and touch the tools that he uses and they were even able to try on his beekeeper’s protective hat.

Having a local expert come in engages the students and gets them excited about what they are learning. They have a chance to interact with someone new, which helps to build knowledge and community.

And sometimes, instead of bringing in an expert, we go to visit an expert. The Grade 8 class recently went to visit the House of Lazarus to learn from the experts there.

As they look at Psalm 8, they are considering how they can use what God has given them to be a blessing to others. At the Community Food Share and the House of Lazarus they learned about these organizations and how they give back to the community.

The students were amazed at the many ways they help within our community. Now each student is working on their own independent project – finding a way to give from the abundance that they have been given.

As you can see, drawing on the knowledge of local experts is helping us to build our knowledge and it also helps to build community as students meet new people and find out about different things happening in the community.

Hopefully we’ve piqued your interest about what is happening at TCS and that you want to come and see for yourself what we are all a buzz about!

You are all invited to our Spring Celebration of Learning, happening Thurs, May 2 at 6:45pm. and Fri, May 3 at 10:00am.

The format for the Celebration is as follows:

  • Come – arrive and be welcomed by the students.
  • Consider – go to the classrooms/gym/hallway and learn from the student experts about honeybees, sunflowers, Neptune and more. They have lots to share with you! There will also be refreshments available 🙂
  • Contemplate – one classroom will be set up with a quiet space for you to contemplate who you are and how much God loves you.
  • Communal Worship – at a certain point in the celebration you will be called down to the gym where we will join together in a time of worship and reflection.

We hope you can make it!

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
