KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Y.
Zandbergen (2011/12)
BIBLE:
Stories are covered both from the Old and New Testaments using the CSI book
“God’s Family”. Weekly memory work includes Bible verses, songs and some
poems. God's Word, the Bible, provides the basic foundation for the
kindergarten program. Children listen to the stories of God’s actions with his
people and they begin to learn who God is and what he is doing in this world.
They learn the stories through listening and also through movement, seeing,
touching and even touching and smelling. They learn that God is the one who
made such a beautiful creation for us. They learn that God cares for his
people and keeps his promises to them. They learn that God wants his people to
obey him. God's Word is woven into the very fabric of our being and of our
classroom.
MATH:
Resources: "Math Makes Sense" – Addison Wesley and "Math Their Way." The
children work on number sense and numeration through sorting and
classifying objects according to specific characteristics_matching,
estimating, and counting to identify sets with more, fewer or same number of
objects. Children count orally to 100, use cardinal and ordinal numbers, write
numbers from 1-10, recognize numbers 1-20, and show number combinations for
3-10. The children work on measurement by ordering objects to size,
using simple terms (tall/short, big/small, etc.), use non-standard and some
standard measuring devices (tape measure, balance scale, thermometer, clock),
identify the value of some coins. Spatial Sense and Geometry - the
children describe spatial relationships (e.g., above/below, near/far, in/out);
identify and sort three-dimensional objects as well as two-dimensional shapes.
Patterning - Children identify and reproduce simple patterns and create
and extend simple patterns using a variety of material or actions. Children
learn to see and appreciate the patterns in God's creation. Graphing,
Statistics, Probability - Children place specific objects on concrete
graphs, pictographs, bar graphs, learn to use simple grids in games, and learn
to keep a tally. The focus is on an active, exploratory problem –solving
approach to learning mathematics.
LANGUAGE:
Phonics/Word Study - Resource "Jolly Phonics." Children learn the letters
from the 42 sounds of English; identify all the letters of the alphabet, both
capitals and lower case. Children learn letter formation, blending and learn
to identify sounds in words. Some tricky words are learned. Writing –
Resource: “Writing Rainbow”. The students begin to understand that language
and writing are gifts from God. Children write simple messages, write a
sentence following a given pattern, print names and sight words, show evidence
of spacing between words. Children contribute words or sentences to a class
chart story. Reading Skills - Children listen to stories, poems and
non-fiction materials. Children read colour words; numeral words 1-10 and
other commonly used words. Children retell stories and make predictions.
Children are aware of text progression and they enjoy being read to and want
to learn to read. Names of peers, words round the classroom, frequently used
words, shape words are recognized. Listening and Speaking - Children
participate in group discussions, programs, and conversations. Communication
through role-playing, dramatization and puppetry. Children participate in
prayer. Social courtesies are developed through greeting, invitations,
requests, show and tell, telephone conversations, and accepting apologies.
Media Materials - Children enjoy books, watching videos, dramatic
presentations. Children respond to media material verbally and non-verbally.
ART: Children
paint and draw pictures using a variety of tools and materials, mix paint to
create new colours, make three-dimensional constructions with paper and junk
materials, cutting and pasting activities, finger painting, weaving and lacing
skills. Children use play clay and plasticine to create sculptures, make a
collage, rubbing, print making using various objects.
MUSIC:
Resource "Music and Movement-God's Children Sing." The children learn and
enjoy many different types of songs. They are encouraged to see music as a
gift from God and an every day means in which to praise Him. Children practice
rhythmic patterns and move in response to the tempo and mood of music.
Children use their creativity in movement, mime and dance activities. Children
listen to the sound of familiar instruments. Children enact stories and play
the part of different characters. Many songs are from the Bible program “God’s
Family.
FRENCH:
Resource: "Petit Dimoitou." Through the use of puppets, charts and cassettes,
the children learn vocabulary, songs and poems, colours, calendar, weather and
counting using the following themes: Hello My Friends, Autumn, Vegetables,
Fruit, Winter and Sports, Valentine's, Spring, At the Farm, Summer.
PHYSICAL
EDUCATION: CSI Physical Education PreK-2
Exploring
movement possibilities: Whole body: crawling, walking, running, leaping,
jumping, hopping, skipping, sliding, galloping, rolling, falling, dodging.
Body parts: bending, stretching, turning, twisting, pushing, pulling, lifting,
swinging and circling. Motor Proficiency - Sensor Motor Attributes:
Ball skills - rolling, bouncing, throwing. Identify body parts and muscle
feeling; develop movement directions (right and left), balancing, rhythm, and
patterning. Using the balance beam and climbing apparatus. Relating to
others: co-operation using a parachute, playing games, with partners. Each
student in kindergarten will receive a series of successful motor experiences.
The ability to express self through movement helps to shape the students'
impression of self and of his or her role in life. An environment of
sensory-motor successes can help pave the way toward students seeing
themselves as unique children of God.
